Longing For The Spirit
--
An Interview with Foster, Oct. 16, 2019
I was so happy to speak with “Longing For The Spirit” host Paul Silva about recovery, transition, and my new book Shine of the Ever. Paul and I have known each other for more than 5 years, and he has been a supportive friend and witness to many of the changes I’ve experienced.
It means to much to hear him call me by my chosen name and pronouns. When I met Paul, I was “Claire” and she/her. Now, I’m “Foster” and he/they. I’m still a writer, solo parent, trauma survivor, and person in recovery. However, learning about my gender has given me so much freedom, confidence and joy that it has completely transformed my experience and empowered me to take on life’s challenges in a new way. Paul and I had a wonderful conversation about how to talk to trans people and why inclusive language in fiction (as in life) are so important.
Many of the personal messages I get from readers or at speaking events are from allies, friends, and family members who want to support trans people but don’t know how — and don’t want to accidentally say or do the wrong thing. I can’t speak for the trans community, but I can offer some pointers about etiquette that should be helpful.
You can listen to the interview at the link above.
As a plus, if you’re interested in my basic guide to “how to talk to trans people,” you can find it here.
